Why this Theme?

I chose Clean Water and Sanitation because it’s an issue that affects everything else. You can’t discuss health, education, poverty, or equality without encountering water somewhere in the mix. A child who spends hours fetching water isn’t able to attend school. A community without proper sanitation faces diseases that a functioning system could prevent. A family without access to safe drinking water is already fighting a battle that most of us never have to consider.

This goal feels urgent to me because it’s not an abstract concept; it’s something that people deal with every day, and we actually have the tools to address it. Clean water isn’t a distant dream; it’s a solvable problem. That combination of urgency and the possibility of a solution is what draws me to this issue.

The core goal: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, by 2030.

Why it matters

  • Around 2 billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water
  • About 3.5 billion people lack safely managed sanitation
  • Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population and is projected to rise with climate change
  • Poor water and sanitation contribute to the spread of preventable diseases (diarrheal disease, cholera, typhoid) and are especially deadly for children under 5

Clean water and sanitation aren’t luxuries. They’re basic human rights, something the United Nations recognizes as essential to human dignity and survival. Yet today, billions of people still don’t have access to safely managed drinking water or adequate sanitation. That gap doesn’t just cause inconvenience. It drives disease, limits education, especially for girls, and traps entire communities in cycles of poverty that clean infrastructure could help break. Investing in water and sanitation means investing in global health itself, because without it, no other public health goal is really within reach.

Primary Focus Areas: Safe drinking water, basic sanitation and hygiene, water quality and wastewater management, water-use efficiency, and protecting water ecosystems.

Most people walk through life assuming clean water is just a given here in America, something that flows the second you turn a knob and never even crosses your mind twice. But that assumption leaves out a whole population living right in our own backyard. Right now there are millions of Americans, over two million by some counts, who still don’t have access to running water or a working toilet in their own homes. This isn’t some far off crisis happening overseas, it’s happening in places like the Navajo Nation, in rural Alabama, in Texas border communities, and even in parts of California where the water coming out of the tap isn’t safe to drink. The people hit hardest are usually Black, Indigenous, Latino, and low income communities, folks who’ve been left out of the infrastructure investment that the rest of the country takes for granted. That disconnect, between what we assume is guaranteed and what’s actually true for millions of our neighbors, is exactly why this campaign matters. Clean water isn’t just a global issue, it’s a local one too, and sometimes the crisis closest to home is the easiest one to overlook.
